Is it the right time to adopt the greenhouse technology ,and, embrace the organic foods as the world heeds green?

As a matter of fact, the world is going green all the way.As people continue to devise ways on how best they can conserve the environment, the more they are embracing green. It seems as if people are being more concerned about their environment and how best to preserve it more than before.

Going green is a popular phrase being bandied about these days.In essence, green refers to using various everyday methods to help save the world and it’s environment. From the smallest detail to the most sweeping aspect of life ,saving the world by implementing a green lifestyle is something that more and more people are aiming to do.It can begin in small ,easy to manage ways.Green living is infiltration all parts of daily life and the planet is sure to be better for it.

Alternative ways of doing things are being sort and adopted at the expense of the older ways of doing things ,with the new ones being environment friendly, cost effective, aren’t tedious and involving and health wise doesn’t have any side effects.

Even the food products we are producing and consuming ,it is being advocated that we do embrace and adopt the organic chemical free foods.Purchasing this organic foods is another way that many people begins going green and is considered a very effective method of trying to save the world and all it’s resources.According to health experts and researchers argument’s has it that the chemical that we do use in our crops,do have severe adverse effects in our health, especially the pesticides. They have attributed the rising number cases of cancerous tumour and skin diseases to this chemically induced food crops, and,at times been in contact with them.

It has been pinpointed that before a crop matures 4-6 different chemicals induced products are used to either, control pests,or,to boast the plant itself to yield more. Thus,it has being argued that some chemicals may be metabolically absorbed by the plant in that process and enters into the plant system. And,when you do consume that crop product ,it’s already chemically induced which at the end might have negative repercussion on your health.Such raised concerns questions the effectiveness of the pesticides.

Although there are benefits to the use of pesticides, some have drawbacks, such as potential toxicity to humans and other animals ,which according to Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutant,9 of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides.Pesticides may cause acute and delayed health effects in those who are exposed. It’s exposure can cause a variety of adverse health effects. These effects can range from simple irritation of the skin and eyes to more severe effects such as affecting the nervous system ,mimicking hormones causing reproductive problems and also causing cancer.

According to World Health Organization and U.N Environment programme ,it estimates that each year ,3 million workers in agriculture in developing world experience severe poisoning from pesticide, about 18,000 of whom die.According to one study ,as many as 25 million workers in developing countries may suffer mild pesticide poisoning yearly.

Pesticide use also raises a number of environmental concerns.Over 98 percent of sprayed insecticide and 95 percent herbicides reach a destination other than their targeted species ,including non-targeted species ,air, water, and soil.Pesticide drift occurs when pesticide suspended in the air as particles are carried by wind to other areas ,potentially contaminating them.

Pesticides are one of the causes of water pollution ,and, some are persistent organic pollutant and contribute to soil contamination. In addition ,pesticide use reduces bio-diversity,nitrogen fixation, destroys habitats[especially for birds]and threatens endangered species.

Thus,it’s in these raised concerns and arguments that a greenhouse technology has come as an alternative farming method,a preferred choice and a substitute to outdoor farming.According to agricultural experts the adoption of the greenhouse technology is now the way to go due to it’s convenience ,requires a small portion of land, highly productive, doesn’t need much chemicals and overall doesn’t require much farm input like outdoor farming and it isn’t involving.

A greenhouse that is being advocated and recommended for, is a simple cost effective one for small scale farmers .It is an enclosed transparent house built by readily available materials ,and, where you do plant your crops .The technology wave have caught many people who have embraced it to perfection and are reaping big.In comparison to the outdoor farming ,the experts have given the greenhouse technology a clean bill of health and a big plus.

The introduction of greenhouse in Kenya heralds what could be a major shift from open pollinated farming to hybrid high yielding methods, which if adopted could lead to massive improvement in crop production output, income and ultimately self-sufficiency in food production.

According to the Kenya Horticultural Development Project, which pioneered a greenhouse tomato project,in one of the activities the programme is supporting to help increase the income of rural areas households ,is borrowed from Israel, where the country has most of it’s agriculture under greenhouses due to scarcity of water and land.It is also widely practised in U.S.A .And,if the concept is widely embraced we will have year-round supply of produce.

Growing crops under greenhouse has many advantages ,according to the project technical advisor,Peter Randa, among them the ability to produce huge quantities on a small piece of land and continued harvesting. It takes shorter period to mature compared to outdoor farming .And,due to controlled irrigation and temperatures ,the crop sports a continues output of flowers and fruits at all different stages.

He further argues that greenhouse growing technique comes with some basic training on hygiene, most common infections are easily kept at bay. Also kept at bay are insects and other pests known to invade plants,as well as weeds.Less labour is employed in a greenhouse ,while exposure to chemical toxins associated with application are minimized ,or,eliminated altogether. It is also good for the environment.
