……..Has Cancer turned out to be the real killer disease in this day and age? This is the biggest health scare people are grappling with these days. It is turning out to be a health concern.

And, it seems as if the Cancer prevalence is on the rise if the number of reported cases that are being attended to in our hospitals are anything to go by. Cancer is a health threat and it is real and in its’ it leaves a trail of devastating effects.

If Cancer statistics can be conducted, it will showcase how it’s prevalence has affected society and how it has ravaged the victims and their families. And, as the government embarks on Universal Health Care, more focus should be on Cancer treatment.

Many people are succumbing to this killer disease due to lack of early detection, and, also misdiagnosis. Patients have exhausted their savings and sold properties to finance treatment, but, sadly they end up losing the battle.

Cancer treatment is expensive. At Kshs.3600 per chemotherapy session, exclusive of the treatment drugs makes Cancer costly to treat. It drains the resources of the victims to the last coin.

Late diagnosis is a major issue of concern. Cancer when diagnosed early, is treatable, but, most people discover they have been diagnosed when it is in its late stage….where it has taken the toil of the body where the chances of survival are nil.

The demise of Safaricom Chief Executive Officer, Bob Collymore, due to Cancer, has brought to the fore the reality of Cancer phenomenon and it’s prevalence in the country. Collymore’s demise aroused the ghosts of Cancer which is ravaging people in its wake.

And, the devastating effects of Cancer continues to be experienced and felt in society.

But, the questions still lingers……when will the Kenyans stop suffering in terms of accessing radiotherapy services? What happened to universal health care coverage? And, when will Kenya upgrade it’s Cancer Centres?

The Government should fund the diagnosis and treatment of Cancer and train more medical personnel especially oncologists. Also, they should upgrade our Cancer Treatment Centres.

It has been noted that poor health systems and poor referral systems are to blame for Cancer deaths.
